Princess Grace top-down baby sweater knitting pattern

First published in 1956 by Woman's Day, the Princess Grace baby sweater has become quite the icon knitting pattern for newborn babies. It was the top-down baby jacket pattern Grace Kelly knit for her first born Princess Caroline.



The Princess Grace baby sweater is knit with fingering or sock yarn. KnitPicks offers a palette of 150 colors of 3-ply wool yarn, $3.59, 50 g, 231 yards per ball. Here is the

Size: For a newborn infant.
Materials: "3-ply baby yarn, 1 ounce color A, small amount of color B" (from 1956) sock yarn
will do as well
Crochet hook size 6; 3/4 yard 1/4" wide satin ribbon
4 stitch holders
Needles: Size US 1 and 3, or UK size 10 and 12.
Gauge: 15 sts x 21 rows = 2"


Yoke:
Starting at neck edge (top down), CO 72 sts with size 3 needles and color A. P 1 row.
Next row: Beading row — K1, (YO, k2tog) 35 times, k1.
Next row: purl
Yoke shaping:
1st row: K15 (left front), YO, k1 (seam st), YO, k6 (left sleeve), YO, k1 (seam st), YO, k26 (back), YO, k1 (seam st), YO, k6 (right sleeve), YO, k1 (seam st), YO, k15 (right front). (80 sts)*
2nd row: K2, p4, k2, p to last 8 sts, k2, p4, k2
3rd row: (Knit to next seam st, YO, k seam st, YO) 4 times; knit to end.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 14 more times until 200 sts.
Then repeat the 2nd row once more.


Separate for sleeves:
1st row: Knit 32 for left front and place on holder; knit 38 for left sleeve. Place next 60 sts on another holder for back; place next 38 sts on yet another holder for right sleeve; place remaining 32 sts on 4th holder for right front.
Sleeves: Work even on left sleeve for 3.75", ending with a knit row. Change to Size 1 needles, Knit 4 rows. (P 1 row, k 1 row) 3 times, Knit 4 rows. Bind off. Place 38 sts from right sleeve holder onto needle, attach yarn, and work to correspond with left sleeve.


Body or sacque:
Place 32 st left front holder onto righthand needle. Attach yarn.
Onto left hand needle, place the 32 st from right front holder and the 60 sts from back holder. Knit across lefthand needle (124 sts on needle).
Keeping first and last 8 st in established pattern, work even for 3 rows, starting with a purl row.
Next row: Knit 31, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts, k to end. Work 3 rows even.
Next row: Knit 31, inc in next st, k2, inc in next st, k58, inc in next st, k2, inc in next st, k to end. Work three rows even.


Next row: K31, inc in next st, k4, inc in next st, k58, inc in next st, k4, inc in next st, knit to end (136 sts). Work even until sacque measures 5" from beg, ending with knit row. Knit 4 rows.
Next row: K2, p132, k2.
Next row: Knit across.
Repeat last 2 rows once more. Knit 6 rows and bind off.


Finishing: Sew sleeve seams. Attach B at left front edge. With crochet hook, work one row SC along left front edge, lower edge, right front edge and neck; sl st in first single crochet. Break off. Work in similar manner around both cuffs. Run ribbon through neck beading.
