Knit and crochet heirloom baby blanket patterns

Spring and babies have much in common. Carl Sandburg once said: "A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on." Just as springtime performs its renaissance play starring Mother Nature, it's a joyful time when knitters and crocheters start new projects for mothers and babies.

Kaye Smith has knitted two beautiful baby blankets, which will suit nicely for a christening, bris, or just everyday beauties. She has taken a classic feather and fan blanket pattern and made it even better with accented knitted garter stitch edging.

The Feathered Baby Blanket pattern is written for crib-size or lap blanket size, using any sport or worsted weight yarn, and knit with a US 8 (5 mm) circular needle, for ease in the round.

Kaye's other beauty is the Willow's Child pattern. The knitted baby blanket finished size is 40" x 37" knit with US 5 (3.75 mm) needle and uses approximately 1500 yards of fingering yarn; Plymouth Yarn's Happy Feet is recommended, but almost any sock yarn works nicely for this blanket.

The Tree of Life baby blanket pattern by Nicky Epstein for Lion Brand knits up a beautiful keepsake baby blanket for all special occasions in the life of baby. The Tree of Life pattern is based on the Norse myth of the World Tree, which represents the interconnection of all things heavenly and earthly. The gauge is 18 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) on a US 8 (5 mm) needle, so any worsted weight yarn in organic cotton or wool blend will work. The free baby blanket pattern is knit on US 7 (4.5 mm) needles, using Lion Brand 'Pound of Love' yarn. There is also a crochet tree of life blanket pattern. You will have to sign in to Lion Brand to download these free patterns, but the treasures are many after that small task.

Just added at Knitnscribble is the "Soft Baby Blanket" pattern
