"All Creatures Great and Small" new knitting patterns with 1930's Herriot look

photo from PBS Masterpiece Theater, 2020

Quite taken by all the possible knitting patterns in PBS' Masterpiece Theater's new 2020 broadcast of "All Creatures Great and Small," featuring the life of Yorkshire veterinarian, James Herriot, I went searching. There are countless sources for vintage patterns used as recipes for vests and sweaters worn in the mid-1930's when this charming story takes place. Cropped cardigans and pullovers, multi-colored Faire Isles, either knit as vests or worn with Peter Pan collars, jumpers, and the like, have roared back into fashion in the past few years, and there are modern patterns to be found with that vintage look.

To forego any past confusion posed with some vintage patterns, here are a few newly-minted ones, which might tickle your fancy and still offer that 1930's look you are searching for.

Charles Gandy's "Up and Around" vest knitting pattern was first published in 2014. Coincidentally, it is knit with Juniper Moon Farm's "Herriot" on a US5 (3.75mm) needle. The yarn is 100% Camelid - alpaca and is available at $19.95+ per hank, 218 yards (199 meters). Juniper Moon Farm also produces "Herriot Heathers" in the same DK/light worsted gauge at stockists in the US and Canada. Herriot is available at $21.95 at Webs in nine colorways. And, as most of you know, many sellers on Etsy carry Juniper Moon Farm's yarn. The vest knitting pattern is available here for $6.00 US in sizes small to xxl.

Tif Neilan's "Coastal Crop Raglan" jumper or pullover is a very interesting design for sizes 34-66" (86-168cm). Knit seamlessly in one piece in the round, top-down with German short rows to bring the back of the neck up, it has a very attractive slip-stitch cuff and collar, really a modern version of a 1930's classic raglan sleeve sweater.

Tif, of "tif handknits," has used both a DK and a sock yarn held together from Hypothesis Yarns and size 6-8US (4-5mm) needles, and says to choose a size roughly 2-7" (5-18cm) larger than your bust. The Tweed DK from Hypothesis yarns has 231 yards (211m) and is 85% Superwash wool and 15% Donegal Nep, hand-dyed in Nova Scotia. Since the pattern calls for only 52-102 yards (48-93m) of the contrasting sock yarn, am assuming the two yarns are worked together just on the neck and cuffs.

Keep in mind, this is a one-woman yarn show and sometimes limited in supply. Please find the Tweed DK here.  Follow Hypothesis Yarns on Facebook for the latest details.
